Introduction Burning fireplaces with real flames use oxygin. No fire will burn without oxygin. Any combustion give of heat, fumes, gasses, moist, and suit; just to name a few.

Vent free, novent and biofuel fireplaces also release fumes and gasses. YES, you do not smell a gas stove when cooking. The flame is nice and blue for max heat with proper combustion features. The main reason you do not smell the gas stove is; it burns a lot less gas than a fireplace burner and it burns for short time periods.

Fireplaces; gas, wood or coal must be vented. Even novent and vent free fires need to be vented, they do not require a chimney, but the need a open window door or louver to keep the air in the room at the right oxygin levels

Vent free and novent fireplaces make use of a proper fuel and oxygin ratios to get a clean burning flame that minimize the release of toxic fumes. If this balance is disturbed at the primary air mixture, a draft over fireplace and the decorative stone, log or coal not packed correctly the combustion will not be within regulation. This can normally be seen in a yellow tipped flame. The longer the yellow tips the more fumes. Yellow flames means lack of oxygin. Unfortunataly it is the yellow flame that make a realistic flame. Make sure the builder/ installation guy check the airways to the underside of your gas burner, specially with novent and vent free burners. If your eyes burn or you start feeling sick, there might be a problem with the burner.

The hight above sea level also play a role, the higher you go, the less oxygin. Do not buy your gas fireplace in Gauteng and take it to the Coast, it will not burn properly.
