Canopy and Hoods.

Let us solve your extraction problem.

Canopy and extractor hoods normally relates to the kitchen?, not true. In a braai or fireplace it’s called a gather, smoke collector, extractor or canopy.
Try us for a smoke extractor, braai canopy or fireplace gather (canopy).

The genaral off the shelf domestic kitchen extractor or hood will not work for a gas braai.

Yes, gas braais do give of a lot off smoke. You will need a proper canopy to collect the smoke

All our canopies are custom build an can be divided into the following:

1.Natural draft canopy.
2.Fan driven canopy.
3.Wall mounted canopy.
4.Island canopy.
5.Exposed canopy.
6.Hidden canopy.

The extraction point can be from the top, side or back.

The basics of any canopy.

  • Canopies need a gather or collection area.
  • Collection area must overlap the source by 150mm on the sides away from the wall.
  • The canopy height are determined by the fan's capacity, canopy design and application.
  • The average face velocity for wall-mounted canopies is 0,5m/s
  • The average face velocity for island canopies is 0,75m/s
  • Fan driven canopies can use smaller duct or flue sizes
  • Fan driven canopies can work around sharp bends
  • Fan driven canopies can use effective filters
  • All canopies can be fitted with built-in lights or controls
  • Speed controls make the use of a canopy very flexible

Fans must be properly planned for the specific application. Keep in mind; heat, noise, switch positions, fan outlets, electrical and flue sizes.

Fan positions.

The best place for a fan is as far away as possible from you.

Fans can be installed inline or in the canopy, but we prefer it on the end of the duct. The fan in this picture are installed into this brick chimney. Nothing vissible

Fans or the motors create noise. The higher the Rpm, the higher the noise. The higher the wind speed through the duct, the higher the noise.

Some fans are sensitive to heat and care must be taken in positioning them. They can be used on gas braai’s, but is not suitable for wood fires.

Most impeller designs are not self cleaning and filters must be use to keep fat and soot deposits out of the system.

Canopies or gathers for fireplaces braai's and kitchens.

Canopies are build for specific applications.

Canopy or gathers can be fan assisted or natural draft.

Things to keep in mind whith a canopy.

  • Canopies need a gather or collection area.
  • What is underneath, wood or gas braai, fireplace or kitchen apliances.
  • The canopy height keeping in mind cross draft.
  • Canopy overhang and over all size.
  • Natural draft or fan asisted.
  • Fan driven canopies can use smaller duct or flue sizes.
  • Natural draft use larger and longer chimneys.
  • Island canopies need support from the roof structure.
  • Canopies in open areas might leak smoke.
  • Are the canopy functunal or decorative

Fans must be properly planned for the specific application. Keep in mind; heat, noise, switch positions, fan outlets, electrical and flue sizes.

Normally a fireplace or a braai genarate heat and special care must be taken on installing the canopy. Canopies are normally manufactured out of steel that expand when heated; make provision for it.

We use a variety of materials such as stainless steel, galvanized, power coated and mild steel to manufacture our canopies to your specifications.

Our  canopies can be covered or painted if needed. We can insulate the canopy to fit into wooden or other combustible structures.

We custom build and design to each individual needs. Glass, wood, marble, tiles, granite, dry wall and steel are just a few materials that are use to cover our canopies.

Remember, instead of extracting up, we can also extract down and blow the smoke or fumes out at floor level. We can go beyond 30m with the ducting to extract the smoke away from sensative areas.

    Standard braai wall mounted canopy.

Standard stainless steel wall mounted extractor canopy. The canpy can be vented direct through the back off the canopy or through the top. The fan can be mounted inside the canopy if needed or the fan can be at the end of the chimney or duct.

All controls are incorparated in the canopy and wires can run in the duct to the fan if needed. It's fitted with two downlights, speed control and specially designed washable filters. The corners are folded and butt joined to get a affordable light weight good quality canopy.

All exposed stainles steel canopies that are custom built with no vissable joints or corners need to be manufactured off thicker stainless to be able to weld and grind it. This option make the canopy modern domestic amd work well with a slick looking kitchen or braai. the folded seem work well with the bigger gas and elecctrical stove with a more robust look. ( cast iron plate inserts in top and heavy duty pot stands and some units with more robust knobs)

Removable stainless steel filter. It can easely be washed and re used. The filter design reduce wind noise and filter resistance. The filter size (420mm x 310mm x 50mm) make it easy to remove wash and replace it in to the canopy. The light switch, speed control, on-off switch and down lighters are positioned in the base of the canoppy(vissable in the picture above). All wires run in the ducting to the fan motor. The fan motor can be in the canopy if no space available. I prefer the fan at the end off the ducting on the outside.
The controls can be on a remote position if its wired correctly.

    Standard canopy dimensions.

Kitchen canopies.

Domestic kitchen canopies are normally installed to remove the smell, fumes and steam out of the kitchen. Sometimes it is more decorative than functional, with no outlet to the outside.

The best way is to extract outside, but there are special filters that will remove smells if the air are resirculated into the room . Proper air cleaning filters are bulky because it use up to 6 different filter sizes. It can be done, especially if there are way to the outside. The filters cannot remove smoke genarated on open fires and braais. It will remove smells created on flat top and chip fryers.

Normally the off the shelve kitchen canopy can not move enough air to remove the smoke off a gas braai. Gas braais create almost the same smoke volumes as a wood or charcoal braai while braaiing. Normally smoke are only created for the duration of the braai and not like wood or charcoal from the time that you light the fire.

Our semi industrial canopies can be placed up to 2100mm from floor level, you can actually walk under the canopy. This gives you more than 1000mm above the stove. Standard of the shelve units must be installed at about 650mm above the cooking area.

Our canopies are fully fuctunal and not only nice looking.

Manufacturing.

Take note. Our canopies are custom build and hand made. It is not punched out by the hundreds with precision machines. When we use exposed stainless steel we are limited to the brushed direction, welding, joins, polishing and installation method must be planned carefully.
Switches, lights, wiring and controls take great effort to incorporate in a stylish manner into the canopy.
The underside of the canopy is also visible. There must be a fine balance between functionality and looks. Functionality means a catchment area and not a smooth underside. The filters is also visible.
